Blinn-Brenham student government president immerses himself in campus activities
'There seems to be something for everyone,' says Devin Smith

Devin Smith already has his plans mapped out for life after Blinn College. In the meantime, he is making his time on the Brenham Campus count.
A sophomore from Katy, Texas, Smith’s busy schedule includes a number of campus and state organizations, working weekends at a winery in nearby Carmine, and obtaining his real estate license.
Smith said his “can-do” attitude comes from his parents.
“Growing up, my parents always told me and my four siblings that we were only limited to what our minds tell us,” he said. “I’m not going to make it seem like juggling all these responsibilities is an easy task, because it certainly is not, but just because it’s not easy doesn’t mean it’s impossible. I have learned that with time management, self-confidence, spiritual guidance, and discipline, these tasks can be achieved. I believe one of the keys to success is to never stop learning.”
Peter Rivera, Director of Housing and Resident Life, called Smith an amazing young man.
“He’s not only mature beyond his age, but he is a great leader among his peers,” Rivera said. “He is a kind and helpful person, respectful, and a great role model. Since I have known Devin, he has displayed excellent leadership, works extremely well with others, and makes a positive impression as a student, leader, and individual.”
Smith said he chose to attend Blinn due to its affordability and the variety of student activities available on campus. In addition to having more on-campus housing than any other community college in the state, the Blinn-Brenham Campus offers a wide range of student organizations, College-sponsored activities, intramural and intercollegiate sports, and a 36,000-square-foot student recreation center.
“From the Engineering Academy to the health science programs, there seems to be something for everyone,” Smith said. “For me, that something is the Student Government Association. Student Government has taught me a lot about myself as well as the importance of student involvement. I most likely would not have known any of this if it was not for Blinn College.”
Smith, who is earning his Associate of Science Degree in Business, already has been offered a position at a real estate company in his hometown of Katy.
“After Blinn, I plan to go straight to work,” he said.
Rivera said Smith has a bright future.
“I anticipate we will see him do many great things, not just at Blinn while he is still here, but in his community, his church, and whatever endeavors he pursues,” said Rivera.
