Seven students complete Blinn College Phlebotomy Technician Program

Coursework includes 96 hours of classroom instruction, 116 hours in clinical setting

Seven students recently completed the Blinn College District Phlebotomy Technician Program.

Held on the Bryan Campus, the three-course program includes 96 hours of classroom instruction and 116 hours in a clinical setting. The classroom portion focuses on phlebotomy rules, regulations, and practices. Students must pass a skills test before proceeding to the clinical portion.

Receiving certificates of completion were Micayla Agnew, Bryan; Asya T. Bui, Calvert; Michelle A. Burch, College Station; Andrea Dees, Bedias; Jacqueline Lofton, College Station; Elizabeth A. Plumlee, College Station; and Inez A. Vasquez, College Station.

Students learn state-of-the art techniques for collecting blood. The program also emphasizes infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling and handling, and quality assurance.

Phlebotomy is a fast-growing field, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, with national demand expected to grow 17% annually from 2019 through 2029. The average annual salary in 2020 was $36,320.

“Certified phlebotomists work in a number of areas in the medical field, including hospitals, labs, blood donor centers, and doctors’ offices,” said Karla Flanagan, Dean of Technical and Community Education. “In Blinn’s program, our students get the skills they need to excel and be valuable members of healthcare teams.”

Completion of the program also can serve as a foundation for nursing school or other careers in the medical field, Flanagan said.

Blinn’s Division of Technical and Community Education includes courses designed to provide students with training they need to enter the workforce immediately after completion. Scholarships are available and in many instances students can choose from daytime, evening, and weekend options.
