Blinn-Bryan honor society recognized with six awards at regional convention

The Blinn College-Bryan Campus Alpha Phi Lambda Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society recently was recognized with six awards at PTK’s Texas regional conference held in Frisco.

The Blinn-Bryan honor society received three individual and three chapter awards. Individual awards included Distinguished Advisor Award, Professor and Department Head Emily Erdmann; Distinguished College Administrator Award, Dr. Marcelo Bussiki, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; and Distinguished Chapter Officer Award, Max Sanchez, former Blinn student.

“My time with Phi That Kappa enriched my experience at Blinn College and helped me learn to be a true scholar and how to thrive in a rigorous academic environment,” said Sanchez, who transferred to Texas A&M University in January 2022 to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. “Receiving this award is very humbling and it is a great honor for my hard work to be recognized by my PTK friends and advisors.”

Blinn-Bryan Alpha Phi Lambda also received three chapter awards, including Top Texas Chapter, Honors in Action Award of Merit, and the College Project Award of Merit.

The two project-related awards tackled issues that effect and benefit the Blinn student community. The Honors in Action Award of Merit examined environmentally friendly plumbing. After researching the topic, PTK members presented their findings to a class of plumbing students enrolled in Blinn’s Plumbing Program offered at the RELLIS Campus.

“My work on the Honors in Action project specifically prepared me for the undergraduate research projects I have begun to tackle after transferring,” Sanchez said. “I would encourage all students looking to build friendships and strengthen their academic abilities to join PTK.”

For the College Project Award of Merit, PTK members worked with Bussiki and Blinn’s Marketing and Communications Department to create a series of informational videos that provide students with academic success tips.

“I am so proud of these students and all the hard work that went into these projects,” Erdmann said. “Their dedication is evident and receiving these awards is a great culmination to a difficult year.”

PTK is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievements of students at associate degree-granting colleges. To be inducted, students must have at least a 3.5 grade point average with a minimum of 12 transferrable hours. The society is comprised of more than 3.8 million members, with almost 1,300 chapters in 11 countries.
