Musicians from across Texas are being invited to compete in the Blinn College District's 21st annual Young Pianist Competition.
The contest, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, in the Dr. W.W. O'Donnell Performing Arts Center on the Brenham Campus, is open to students in grades 5-12. The deadline to apply is Monday, Jan. 9. Entry forms are available at www.blinn.edu/music/contest.html.
Competitors will perform two memorized, original solo piano compositions of contrasting styles. Judges will rate each performer and provide a comment sheet.
Trophies will be given to the top performers in each category, along with overall awards for best performance and runner-up. Judges will be Dr. Terry Lynn Hudson of Baylor University, Dr. Michai Vatca of Sam Houston State University, and Jasmine Hatem of the University of St. Thomas.
Performers in grades 11 or 12 who indicate an interest in attending Blinn may also be offered the opportunity for a Blinn instrumental music scholarship.
“The contest is an opportunity for young pianists to compete against their peers and also to get detailed input on their performances from some elite judges,” said John Dujka, Instrumental Music Professor at Blinn.
The entry fee is $40. Checks made out to the Blinn College Piano Club can be mailed to Dujka at P.O. Box 461, 902 College Ave., Brenham, Texas 77833.
Located on the Brenham Campus, the Blinn Music Department offers small classes, one-on-one attention, practical learning, and easily accessible faculty so that students are actively engaged in a superior learning environment.
The department’s outstanding, world-class music instructors care about students and encourage their individual growth. Teaching is a top priority as students are exposed to a wealth of music, ideas, and issues that expand learning horizons.
