When their 4-year-old son Adam died from leukemia in 2003, Donna and Tim Culliver of Brenham turned tragedy into hope.

The Cullivers created Adam’s Angels Ministry, a non-profit organization that has helped hundreds of families facing childhood cancer with support ranging from financial aid to gift cards and toys.

Adam’s Angels recently extended its mission by gifting $50,000 to the Blinn College Foundation for two endowed scholarships.

Donna Culliver, who attended the Blinn College-Brenham Campus, said the scholarships will be earmarked for cancer survivors or members of their families who want to attend college.

“Adam would have probably gone to Blinn for two years,” she said. “We deal with a lot of kids with cancer in the community, and we wanted to give them the opportunity for college. This is a big milestone in their lives, and they sometimes don’t make it to the college level. When they do, the family is usually financially strapped, so they have to use what they can for financial assistance. We thought what better place than to start here at home? We’re so fortunate to have Blinn. It’s special.”

Heather Thielemann, who chairs the Education Committee for Adam’s Angels, said students can use the awards for a wide range of degree and certificate options, providing recipients with a pathway toward an unlimited number of career opportunities.

“This is an opportunity to give some scholarships and continue to help someone, knowing we’re all looking for some kind of credentials to go out into the workforce,” Thielemann said. “We’re trying to be a safety net for them to have a great future.”

Nancy Berry, Chair of the Blinn Foundation Board of Directors, said the scholarships endowed by Adam’s Angels are “a tremendous example of putting others first.”

“These scholarships are even more meaningful because they represent overcoming personal tragedy to help others,” said Berry. “We’re so grateful for the generosity of Adam’s Angels Ministry and all of the people who have donated to its worthy cause. The scholarships it has provided will help so many students reach their goals.”

Endowed scholarships are available to incoming and returning students from a wide range of backgrounds, majors, and experiences. Students are considered based on high academic achievement, participation in student activities, and community involvement.

Current high school and college students can apply for Blinn scholarships by completing the application at www.blinn.edu/scholarships. Prior to applying for scholarships, students must complete their application for admission to Blinn College at www.applytexas.org.
