Texas Woman’s University announce new music therapy co-enrollment partnership

TWU’s music therapy program is one of just five in the State of Texas

Texas Woman’s University (TWU) and the Blinn College District are partnering to provide students a clear and affordable pathway to their Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy.

Through the partnership, students can co-enroll at both institutions, earning their Associate of Arts in Music – Field of Study from Blinn and applying those credits toward their Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy from TWU. Future pathways leading to additional bachelor’s degree options are in development.

Music therapy students learn to use music to achieve therapeutic outcomes, such as helping patients deal with disease, trauma, anxiety, or pain. Music therapists often work to improve speech, social, or coping skills; aid in physical rehabilitation; or even help people find meaning in the experience of creating or listening to music.

“Texas Woman’s is excited about extending opportunities in music therapy to the students of Blinn College,” said TWU’s College of Arts & Sciences Dean Abigail Tilton.  “Facilitating the transition from a community college to Texas Woman’s aligns with our mission of helping educate more Texans, and we are doubly pleased to be opening up a career pathway that is both growing and promoting health and wellbeing.”

TWU’s music therapy program is the oldest ongoing program in Texas and one of the first in the nation. It is one of only five universities in Texas offering music therapy degrees and is approved by the American Music Therapy Association.

Students receive academic and clinical training with a focus on experiential, hands-on learning, and program graduates have gone on to work in local children’s theaters, community centers, hospitals, and schools. Many graduates have established successful clinics of their own and they often hire TWU music therapy students and interns.

Blinn’s Music Program provides a well-rounded education in music theory, performance, and history with faculty who bring significant musical experience into the classroom. In addition the Associate of Arts degree, Blinn offers opportunities for students to participate in ensembles, including choir, band, and orchestra, as well as opportunities for individual performance and composition.
