For Brandi Burkett, education is more than just a path to a career—it’s a testament to perseverance, growth, and the power of second chances.

A non-traditional student who returned to college after years of entrepreneurial success, Brandi will graduate in May with her Associate of Applied Science in Legal Assistant (Paralegal) from Blinn College. Her journey has led to academic success and ignited her passion for mediation, a field where she hopes to make a lasting impact.

Inspired by Family, Motivated by Advocacy

Brandi’s decision to return to school was deeply personal. Growing up in a financially struggling household, she watched her mother work tirelessly to earn a college degree, setting an example of resilience that stayed with her.

“My mom went back to school while raising four kids,” Brandi recalled. “She eventually earned her degree and now works as a librarian in California. Seeing her determination made me realize that it’s never too late to invest in yourself.”

Years later, as her own children prepared for college, Brandi decided to take the leap herself. Having previously pursued careers in photography and digital marketing, she was drawn back to a lifelong interest in law and justice. Blinn’s Paralegal and Legal Studies Program offered a structured, supportive environment where she could pursue that passion while balancing her responsibilities as a mother and entrepreneur.

Discovering Mediation: A Career with Purpose

Brandi’s studies at Blinn opened new doors, but it was her mediation class that truly changed her trajectory. Initially drawn to the legal field as a means of advocacy, she quickly realized that mediation—helping people resolve disputes outside of court—aligned perfectly with her skills and values.

“Mediation is a space where cooperation and open-mindedness are prioritized over winning or losing,” she said. “I love that aspect of it.”

Through Blinn’s program, Brandi earned her 40-hour mediation certificate and interned at the Dispute Resolution Center in Bryan, where she gained hands-on experience helping individuals navigate conflicts. Her dedication earned her the center’s New Mediator of the Year award, reinforcing her decision to build a career in the field. She has since completed additional specialized training in family law and child protective services mediation and is working toward state certification.

Blinn’s Supportive Learning Environment

Returning to school after years away wasn’t easy, but Brandi credits Blinn’s faculty and resources for making the transition smooth.

“I was absolutely nervous at first,” she admitted. “I hadn’t been in school since 1994, but the faculty at Blinn, especially in the Paralegal Program, were incredible. Intro to Law was a game-changer for me—it provided the foundation I needed to succeed in all my later courses.”

In addition to her studies, Brandi became involved with the Legal Assistant Student Organization, serving as the board president and building valuable connections with peers and professionals. As the spouse of a disabled veteran, she also worked with Blinn’s Veteran Services Department and praised the staff for their guidance and support in navigating financial aid and benefits.

A Message to Future Students

Now on the brink of graduation, Brandi has a message for anyone considering a return to education:

“It’s not too late. Blinn is the perfect balance—it’s big enough to have great resources and connections but small enough to be personal and welcoming,” she said. “The hardest part is starting. Once you begin, the semesters fly by, and before you know it, you’re close to finishing.”

As she prepares for the next chapter—building her own mediation business—Brandi is grateful for the skills and confidence she gained at Blinn. Her journey proves that no matter your background or how long it’s been since you were last in a classroom, Blinn has the power to transform your future.
