Blinn College livestock judging team places third at National Western Stock Show

Kelton Poe is top overall individual at contest in Denver

Kelton PoeThe Blinn College livestock judging team placed third in the team standings and had the top individual at the National Western Stock Show Carload Contest in Denver, Colo.

Blinn’s 4,002 points were good enough for third among 25 teams at the prestigious competition. Sophomore Kelton Poe led the individual results with 339 points. Illinois Central College won the meet with 4,013 points.

Other members of the Blinn team were Kevin Jendrusch, who placed 11 th overall; Quensey Torrez, 20th overall; Whitney Walters; and Fritz Anton.

“I am very proud of this team’s effort and look forward to a successful spring semester,” said Livestock Judging coach Quest Newberry.

In the Carload Contest, teams judge four pens of cattle which consist of four to six head per pen.

Blinn will compete next in the Fort Worth Livestock Show on Feb. 4.

The livestock judging team is part of Blinn’s Agricultural Sciences Program, which has one of the most active extracurricular programs in the state, including livestock judging, the Agriculture Club, wildlife, agriculture mechanics, and horticulture.
