Faculty Professional Development
Blinn College Administrative Regulations Manual
Effective Date: November 18, 2015; amended April 7, 2026
Board Policy Reference: DK
Purpose
This Administrative Regulation outlines requirements for Faculty Professional Development in accordance with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Standard 6.5 Faculty Development.
Objectives
Each faculty member shall meet the professional development expectations of the Blinn College District in accordance with SACSCOC standards.
Procedures/Guidelines
Full-time faculty shall obtain at least five (5) and part-time faculty shall obtain at least three (3) professional development points each fiscal year. A professional development activity is an enterprise focused toward academic, pedagogical, or scholarly enrichment. A point system has been established for professional development activities, and a table is provided below.
Faculty submit their professional development activities using the Professional Development/Faculty Service Menu link on the myBlinn Faculty Applications Card. Upon faculty submission, the appropriate division dean receives the request to approve or deny. If an activity does not fit into one of the described categories, then the appropriate division dean refers the request to the Professional Development Program Committee (PDPC).
The PDPC then reviews the activity description and supporting documents to assign a point value for that activity. Finally, the PDPC chair communicates the committee’s decision via email to both the appropriate division dean and faculty member.
The Professional Development/Faculty Service Menu also includes a query feature, which allows faculty to review their professional development submissions. Information regarding the professional development process may be found in the Faculty Handbook (2.13.1, 2.17, 2.17.1), on the A-Z Index page of the Blinn website, and in Board Policy DK (Local).
Other Professional Development
Faculty are also encouraged to earn additional postsecondary credits, certifications, and/or licensures in their respective teaching fields. These hours are not reported through this tracking program but should instead be reported directly to the appropriate division dean for review and inclusion in employment records. The Faculty Handbook (2.18.3) provides detailed information regarding the milestones and regulations for incremental salary increases beyond the base degree.
